FT: UK ambassador to Mexico sacked after joke with machine gun and colleague
The British ambassador to Mexico, John Benjamin, was sacked after making a joke with a gun pointed at a colleague. About the incident that happened in April, reported publication of the Financial Times (FT).
During an official trip to the Mexican states of Durango and Sinaloa, Benjamin pointed a gun at a colleague who was with him in a company car. In all likelihood, the weapon belonged to security guards protecting the politician during a tour of the northern part of the country, where criminal cartels are active.
The bad joke was filmed on a phone video, and then the video became public. However, the ambassador’s leadership did not appreciate his sense of humor, since in Mexico more than 30 thousand people become victims of criminals every year. Therefore, the prank was considered inappropriate and offensive.
A British Foreign Office spokesman said “appropriate action” had been taken, but the British Embassy in Mexico declined to comment.
