of britain who will become the new prime minister Rishi Sunak was an expected choice. In a situation where the support of the conservatives has collapsed, the party needed a stabilizing figure, says an academy researcher Timo Miettinen.

“Compared to many of his previous predecessors, Sunak is more moderate both ideologically and in his performance style,” says Miettinen.

The presentation style was an essential issue, because the former prime minister Boris Johnson colorful personality divided opinions in the party. Having quickly ended up in disaster By Liz Truss the season failed precisely because he represented the ideological extreme.

“Sunak was already more popular than Trusia among MPs”, Miettinen reminds.

Record short Trussi’s period collapsed the support of the conservatives in the lowlands. You should be able to get up from the bottom.

“Conservatives are waiting for a savior figure who would be able to reverse the deep downward spiral. The party is waiting for a savior who could turn the conservatives to the winning side,” says Miettinen.

According to Miettinen, two qualities are needed for the task. “He is expected to have a calming effect on the market so that he is able to stop the downward spiral of the pound and the increase in the price of government bonds.”

As a former finance minister, Sunak has good opportunities for this. After that, he still has another mountain to climb.

The Labor Party support has jumped to as much as 53 percent in opinion polls. It is currently more than 30 percentage points more than the Conservatives.

Suna should also win back voters. Driving the masses wild may be a more difficult task for Sunak than calming the market.

“Sunak may lack the charisma that many saw in Johnson,” says Miettinen.

Boris Johnson was able to get votes for the Conservatives from ordinary citizens. The rebellious Sunak has a more elitist reputation.

“Although Johnson has a similar educational background, Sunak has been a more aristocratic figure characterized by various scandals. The ethnic and religious background also differs from what conservatives are used to. Sunak is of Indian background and not a Christian,” says Miettinen.
