The United Kingdom has announced that it will provide 2.5 million pounds to the Afghan people in the form of immediate support.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss described the earthquake as a “tragedy for the Afghan people” and revealed her country’s pledge of 2.5 million pounds to Afghans affected by this week’s devastating earthquake, according to the Afghan Pajok News Agency on Saturday.
Disaster management officials say 1,000 people died and more than 1,400 were injured in Wednesday’s disaster in the southeast of the country.
Two million pounds will be allocated to the International Federation of the Red Cross to provide shelter, medicine, water, sanitation and other basic needs.
The federation already has staff and volunteers working on the ground to deal with the crisis and help meet urgent humanitarian needs, including in Khost and Paktika provinces.
