Unless your presence in Russia is strictly necessary, we strongly recommend that you consider leaving the country using the remaining commercial routes.
The recommendations are related to the ongoing special operation of the Russian Federation to protect Donbass.
On February 28, the US State Department urged Americans to refrain from traveling to Russia because of the events in Ukraine. Among the possible security threats were allegedly probable acts of terrorism and limited transport links in Russia. US citizens currently in Russia are advised to leave the country immediately.
On the same day, German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock recommended that German citizens who do not have an urgent need to stay in Russia should leave the country.
On February 27, Tatyana Moskalkova, Ombudsman for Human Rights in the Russian Federation, reported that some Russians abroad are facing harassment from foreign citizens. She noted that “people who are just doing their job, trying to live in difficult conditions, support their families, are attacked because of their nationality.”
On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a special operation to protect Donbass. A few days earlier, the situation in the region escalated significantly due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
The authorities of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics announced the evacuation of residents to the Russian Federation, and also turned to Moscow for help. On February 21, the President of the Russian Federation signed a decree recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics.
