The approval has been received for the final project of the Bridge over the Strait of Messina. The Stretto di Messina company, which is responsible for the design, construction and operation of the infrastructure that will connect the Peninsula to Sicily, approved the project report which updated the final one for 2011.

This step thus brings one of the most discussed works to take a fundamental step towards the construction of the viaduct which will now have to have the approval for the executive project. According to the timetable, construction sites should begin following the bureaucratic process, with all the preparatory actions for the construction of the bridge, such as environmental studies, reclamation and opening of the first base camps. The bridge is expected to cost 14.5 billion, including ancillary works.
Cars on the bridge by 2032
The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini confirmed the path that should lead to the opening of the Bridge over the Strait of Messina to the circulation of cars and trains by 2032: “The Bridge over the Strait is a work that will bring development and growth not only in two regions hungry for infrastructure and jobs but throughout Italy – explained the representative of the League to Il Corriere della Sera -, in fact, data from third-party bodies distributes the employment and greater positive wealth effects across the entire national territory and say that the first region for increased GDP and jobs created will be my Lombardy. I confirm that the intention is to open the construction sites by 2024 and open the bridge to road and rail traffic in 2032.”
