BMW says sorry, but they don’t stop there.
Despite the fact that we do not have a large number of car brands in the Netherlands, our country also has a bit of history. Of course we have our Dutch pride Donkervoort. Spyker doesn’t seem to be dead yet, according to Spyker, although we haven’t heard anything about it for years (barring payment reminders).
But of course we also have VDL in the Netherlands, also known as Nedcar and officially VDL Nedcar, a large factory in the south of the country. A lot of cars were built there. After a period of Volvo’s and Mitsubishi’s, Mini’s and BMW’s were produced.
BMW says sorry
This collaboration came to an abrupt end. Initially, the intention was to continue producing the BMWs and MINIs in Born until 2030. That will not be achieved, BMW early retirement by 7 years!
BMW already wanted to pack up and leave Born in 2023. Last month there was a (little bit) good news in the form of an extension. Only for 4 months, but for VDL that is 4 months extra breathing space to find a new partner.
Money (bonbons and flowers unknown)
But that’s just a wipe for the bleeding. BMW’s action is in principle understandable but unforgivable. Fortunately, BMW regrets the action and they send flowers. It is not clear whether Caroline Tensen was called. But there’s more. BMW understands that you cannot make it with a ‘sorry’ and compensates VDL in the financial sense of the word. Specifically: BMW is transferring tens of millions of euros to VDL because of the premature tearing of the contract.
It concerns the sum of no less than 49 million euros. Or well ‘as much as’, secretly it is best if you take into account that NedCar has already made 55 million profit this year (luckily) and they have to do it without a partner for six years.
It is not yet known who will be the new partner. Perhaps a new major player in the field of electric cars? A brand like Lucid, Rivian, XPeng or Nio could perfectly use VDL ‘hub’ for Europe. These brands operate outside the EU and therefore have to pay significant import taxes. Then it is ideal to also make the copies intended for the EU here.
Through: The Limburger.
