The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Tereza Cristina, clarified today (22), that Brazil and the other 102 countries that have committed to a 30% reduction in global methane gas emissions by 2030 will still discuss with each nation how much will need to contribute so that the target set during the 26th Conference on Climate Change (COP26) is achieved jointly.
“Thirty percent is the goal [conjunta] in [redução de] all the countries that signed this agreement”, highlighted the minister when taking stock of the Brazilian participation in the COP26. The ministers of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, and Foreign Affairs, Carlos França, also participated in the presentation on the commitments and actions that the country is going to implement or is already developing.
“Each country will set its target”, added Tereza Cristina, noting that the commitment is “voluntary and non-binding”. According to the minister, one of the first tasks for the public and private sectors will be to improve the ways of measuring the volume of methane emissions, mainly in livestock. Which, according to the minister, will indicate that Brazil is already doing a lot to eliminate the emission of greenhouse gases, including methane.
“Brazil has come a long way with this. We have many actions already taking place for this decrease [da emissão] of methane gas. Many initiatives that will now be better quantified by us so that Brazil can then assume its goal [frente aos demais países] within these 30% [globais]”, added Tereza Cristina.
Echoing the minister, Joaquim Leite said that the discussion on the percentages of reduction in methane emissions that each country will contribute to the global effort will allow Brazil to “expose to the world the national programs that already exist”.
“Brazil already has reduction policies, such as the [Programa Nacional] Zero dump, which decreases [a emissão] of methane; low carbon agriculture. So, Brazil has already been implementing national policies that will contribute to [atingirmos] the overall goal. [A partir disso] let’s point out this volume with which we are going to contribute”, said the minister of the Environment.
“That’s why we had to be within this agreement. To show the world that Brazil is part of the solution and is already doing these activities [de tentar eliminar parte das emissões]”, said the minister.
