Rainfall has left at least 28 people dead in the state of Sao Paulo. The governor, Joao Doria, requested federal aid to counteract the damage. For his part, President Jair Bolsonaro flew over the affected areas and expressed his condolences to the victims.
Civil Defense announced that among the deceased are eight children, and indicated that seven people are missing and 12 wounded.
The count of fatalities was expanded this Wednesday, when firefighters found another three deceased, found in the town of Franco da Rocha, located in the metropolitan area of the city of Sao Paulo.
Of the 645 municipalities of the most populous and richest state in Brazil, the rains have affected at least 36. The authorities indicated that the most affected is Franco da Rocha, with 11 deaths; followed by Francisco Morato, with five deaths, and Embu das Artes, with three victims.
Rainfall has caused road closures, overflowing rivers, floods and landslides. The civil protection authorities remain on alert, because the rain forecasts remain.
President Bolsonaro visits the affected areas
On Tuesday, President Bolsonaro flew over the affected areas and met with their respective mayors. The president referred to the affected buildings, often built irregularly.
“In many areas where residences were built, there was a lack of vision for the future, but people also build in those risky areas out of necessity,” said Bolsonaro, referring to the millions of homes built outside of urban control, not only in Sao Paulo, but throughout Brazil.
The governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, estimated at about 470 million reais, about 89 million dollars, the amount needed to solve and mitigate the effects caused by the meteorological phenomenon.
Since the end of last year and the beginning of this year, several states in the South American country have suffered the ravages of the rains. In Minas Gerais (east), some 30 people lost their lives and in Bahia (east), the floods caused extensive damage and the displacement of some 100,000 people.
According to experts, heavy rainfall is common at this time of year, although they emphasize that it has intensified in recent years.
Highway collapses amid construction work
In the midst of the situation caused by the rains, it was also learned that an important highway in Sao Paulo collapsed. The collapse occurred in an area where the city’s new subway line is being excavated.
Some 50 workers who worked on the site were able to get out of the tunnel without difficulty and two were treated for having had contact with sewage that gushed out at the accident site.
Initially, Doria stated that the accident occurred due to the collision of the machinery with a sewage collector, which was verified shortly after by the regional director of the company in charge of the excavation.
According to the manager, what happened “probably has to do with the rains, with erosion, because the tunnel boring machine was three meters from the collector,” he assured.
The investigation is in development. According to state prosecutors, an investigation was opened to determine the causes and extent of the damage.
