Man came from Portugal to Porto Alegre at the beginning of the month and presented symptoms 3 days later
The Center for Strategic Information on Health Surveillance, an agency linked to the Ministry of Health, is investigating the 1st suspected case of monkeypox in Brazil. According to information obtained by the newspaper The globethe patient is from Porto Alegre (RS) and arrived from Portugal.
He arrived in Brazil on May 10 and showed symptoms 3 days later. He will undergo an appointment and take exams this Monday (May 30, 2022).
The patient had skin lesions in the last week, but, according to the last update, there was an improvement last Saturday (May 28).
The case was reported a week ago. If confirmed, it will be the 1st confirmation of monkeypox in Brazil.
Last Friday (May 27), the world surpassed 400 infected cases, according to the Global.health Monkeypox, an initiative that monitors the numbers released by each nation. This is the biggest outbreak outside the African continent on record.
In Latin America, 3 cases were confirmed, 2 in Argentina and 1 in Bolivia.
The disease, of animal origin, was recorded for the first time in humans in 1970. But it circulates only in Africa, because of the local mammals. Episodes in other regions of the world are rare. The 1st notification outside the continent was in 2003, in the United States.
