A lackluster Brazil achieved a difficult 2-1 victory over its host Chile, in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thanks to a goal by “substitute” Luiz Henrique in the 89th minute.
After a disappointing loss to Paraguay, Brazil had to come back from a goal down, as Eduardo Vargas put Chile ahead with a brilliant header from a Felipe Loyola cross in the second minute.
Chile wasted several opportunities to increase its lead, but Brazil was able to equalize in stoppage time of the first half, when Savinho made a good run from the right side and passed a cross to Igor Jesus, who headed the ball into the goal.
Brazil dominated the course of the second half, and scored the dull winning goal, late in the match, from a wonderful shot from Luiz Henrique, Jesus’ teammate in the Botafogo team, who shot a powerful ball from the edge of the penalty area, to secure the five-time world champions three points that they desperately needed. .
With this victory, Brazil advanced to fourth place in the standings with 13 points, and is two points behind third-placed Uruguay and eight points behind leaders Argentina.
