In recent days, numerous rumors have emerged concerning the name of the possible replacement for Mattia Binotto in Ferrari, always in the event that the farewell of the team principal from Maranello should actually occur. Among the ‘candidates’, one of the most cited recently was that of a man who until now occupied the role of General Manager and Sports Manager of the Formula 1 project, but who had already spent the role of Technical Director in the past Ferrari right in the most successful period of the little horse with Michael Schumacher: Ross Brawn.
The British engineer, indirectly, however, has definitively appeased these voices, doing so in his address book ‘The Ross Brawn Column’ for the official site of the Circus. In his general assessment of the last season, the 68-year-old has indeed announced his retirement from this sport, thus taking the road of retirement after a long career also spent in other teams including Benetton, Honda, Mercedes and his Brawn GP, which led to the conquest of the title in 2009: “My time with Formula 1 is coming to an end Brawn said. I will miss the involvement I had, as well as the camaraderie and friendships that are made in F1. I am satisfied with where we are now. I think there has been a real change in the last six years since I joined the management team, and I’m happy about that. F1 is as strong today as it’s ever been, and I’ve loved everything I’ve done over the last few years.”
In his speech, Brawn added further reasons for his desire to say ‘goodbye’ to Formula 1, consequently canceling any possible return to Ferrari: “Now is the right time to retire – he continued – we’ve done the bulk of the work and now we’re in a period of consolidation. There’s a new car on the way in 2026, but it’s four years from now, which is quite a long way off for me, so it better be the next group of people to take over. I think I’m leaving F1 in a great place. I have loved almost every minute of my 46 year career and have been lucky enough to work with many great teams, great riders and great people. I wouldn’t change anything. One certainty is that without the support of my wife and family I would not have made it and I would not have wanted to. Now I will watch F1 from my sofa, cheering and cursing like an F1 fan, glad the sport is in such a great place and has such a great future. A toast to the great races”.
