Boxing|The boxer got into a difficult situation at Krakow airport.
Ukrainian champion boxer Oleksandr Usyk37, was arrested yesterday at Krakow Airport in Poland.
Heavyweight champion Usyk was on his way to London to watch from Saturday Anthony Joshua and By Daniel Dubois boxing match between Poland, when the Polish police stopped his journey at the airport.
Former wrestler and current member of parliament of Ukraine Zan Belenjuk saw the situation on the spot. The video he filmed shows the police handcuffing Usyk and taking him to the back room.
The reason for the arrest is not clear, but Usyk was released shortly after the incident. Usyk’s wife Ekaterina said in her Instagram story that the police released her husband. According to Jekaterina Usyk, the situation was a misunderstanding.
Oleksandr Usyk also commented on the situation on Instagram.
“Dear friends, there was a misunderstanding in the situation, which was quickly resolved. Thanks to everyone who was concerned about the situation. Thanks to the Ukrainian diplomats for their quick action,” Usyk wrote.
Also President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi react to the matter in the X message service.
“I spoke on the phone with Oleksandr Usyk after the arrest. I was disappointed by this treatment of our citizen and champion. “
Zelenskyi had urged the Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrii Sybihaa and the Minister of the Interior Ihor Klymenko to immediately investigate the details of the situation at Krakow Airport.
“Now everything is fine and our Master has been released and will no longer be arrested,” Zelenskyi added.
Usyk won the heavyweight Olympic gold in London in 2012.
The Ukrainian boxer is scheduled to face Tyson Fury in a rematch on December 21. Earlier in May, the fight between the two ended in Usyk’s favor.
