International the boxing association (IBA) has chosen the Russian Umar Kremlevin for a four-year extension as chairman. 106 member states voted for the extension of the Kremlin. 36 were against and four did not vote.

Executive Director of the Finnish Boxing Association Marko Laine said in an interview with Ilta-Sanomi last week that Finland supports Kremlev’s Dutch challenger Boris van der Vorst.

Kremlev met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the opening of the boxing center opened in Moscow at the beginning of September and published a video and pictures of the meeting on Instagram.

Kremlin has brought IBA’s activities strongly closer to Russia. At the beginning of his presidency, Kremlev acquired the Russian natural gas and oil group Gazprom as a partner, which brought relief to the union’s financial situation, but at the same time tied it more closely to Russia.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has already expressed serious concern about Kremlev’s position at the head of the IBA. The IOC tentatively dropped boxing from the 2028 Olympics, and Kremlev’s re-election is seen in boxing circles as a seal for the loss of the sport’s Olympic status.
