The PSOL candidate for Mayor of São Paulo, Guilherme Boulos, was the target of criticism from his own supporters on social media for exploiting, at the beginning of the second round, the police report registered by the wife of Ricardo Nunes (MDB) in 2011 by alleged practice of domestic violence and threats. The video, published yesterday on the homeless leader’s Instagram, shows voters reacting to the mayor’s explanations about the case. In the comments, many followers expressed dissatisfaction with the strategy adopted by the psolist.
“Guys, this issue is over. We have to focus on his corruption, on contracts without bidding”, suggested a supporter, in a comment that already has almost 800 likes. Another follower suggested focusing only on the proposals: “Society is fed up with this”, he criticized, probably referring to the attack strategy that set the tone for the first round. One user even classified the approach of speaking negatively about the opponent as “old”, “outdated” and “old politics”.
Some comments asked Boulos to change his tone. “Changing the focus would be the best way,” emphasized a supporter, highlighting that Nunes’ wife has already suffered the impact of the exposure. “Don’t stoop to that level! Win for who you are,” advised one voter. “I don’t like the politics of the attack. Talk about your proposals”, reinforced another.
Many also warned about the impact of the strategy. Boulos passed to the second round with a difference of 56,800 votes to Pablo Marçal (PRTB). “Stop these attacks. You won’t win that way”, pointed out one comment. “Do better, Boulos. Shows a clean second round,” one user suggested. “Change your campaign strategy! This is old, old and outdated, it was used in the first round and it went wrong”, concluded a follower.
Boulos has signaled that he intends to explore the police report episode more frequently in the second round. After publishing a video about the case yesterday, he returned to the topic today, highlighting that the mayor even denied the existence of the registration during the campaign and stating that “this is a topic that voters need to know about”. }
The Psolista deputy had also mentioned the case in his press conference shortly after the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) announced the result of the election in the capital of São Paulo.
This Tuesday, the 8th, the Regional Electoral Court of São Paulo (TRE-SP) ordered Boulos to delete a video in which he claims that the mayor physically attacked his wife and has ties to organized crime. In the material, Boulos says that Nunes has “to respond to a report of violence against women”, further clarifying that it is “aggression against women, physical violence”. The police report registered by Nunes’ wife does not mention physical aggression. When ordering the suspension of publication, the judge mentions that Marçal made similar allegations.
“The author’s links with organized crime and the claim that he committed physical violence against women have already been addressed by the Electoral Judiciary in these 2024 elections, with several convictions of the candidate Pablo Marçal for having made similar allegations against the applicant. Therefore, it is also not possible to admit that these accusations were made by the candidate Guilherme Boulos. I understand that in the specific case the danger of delay is present, considering the potential harm of the content to the candidate’s image, as well as the scope of the publication vehicle in question, with rapid dissemination to a large number of people”, writes judge Claudia Barrichello .
Mayor asked opponents to avoid personal topics
Throughout the campaign, Nunes appealed, on several occasions, for opponents not to address family issues. At a certain point, information came to the campaign’s attention that, at the request of President Lula, Boulos had committed to avoiding mention of the mayor’s family. Lula’s youngest son faced accusations of physical and psychological attacks by his ex-girlfriend, classified by his defense as “fantasy”.
An ally of the mayor says that Nunes believed for a while that his family would be spared by the competitors – which was not confirmed in the final stretch of the first round. One wing of the campaign even suggested that Nunes toughen up her speech against Boulos, mentioning, for example, the episode involving the president’s son and the UOL report that revealed the purchase of a Minha Casa, Minha Vida property by the leader’s wife without -roof. But the mayor vetoed any attempt to explore personal topics, claiming that there are ethical limits in an electoral dispute.
