After being at the center of the controversy in the last race in Mexico, Valtteri Bottas he redeemed himself on the occasion of the sprint qualification for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, finished in first place right in front of Max Verstappen. The Finn of Mercedes, who started in the front row behind the Dutchman, was able to make the most of a quicker sprint when the red lights went out to overcome the leader of the world championship standings, then managing the rest of the test without errors.
Thanks to this result, the number 77 will therefore start from pole position on the occasion of the actual race – starting at 18:00 Italian time – with the aim of reconfirming himself and keeping the Red Bull rival behind him, in turn eager to be able to further extend the standings on Lewis Hamilton. The latter, who arrived fifth at the finish line yesterday, will have to start from 10th position due to another penalty.
At the end of the sprint qualifying, Bottas commented on his own test as follows, which allowed him to dismiss the criticisms that hit him after the start in Mexico City: “Today the start was the key thing for me and I did it well – He admitted – we played a bit with the soft rubber. We knew it would be an advantage for the start, and it worked. At that point, it was just a matter of trying to survive to the end. It was quite difficult in the final laps, but Max still struggled to follow me through the corners, so I’m glad he has worked perfectly. The support from the fans has been incredible here, so thanks also to everyone who came today ”.
