Botic van de Zandschulp has reached the third round of the American US Open. The 25-year-old Dutchman, who reached the main tournament in New York via the qualifications, defeated the eighth seeded Norwegian Casper Ruud: 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4. It is a surprising win: the Norwegian is on the eleventh place in the world ranking, Van de Zandschulp is on the same ranking 117th.
A place in the third round is Van de Zandschulp’s best performance in a grand slam tournament to date. The last time a Dutch man managed to reach the third round of a grand slam tournament was in 2013. Igor Sijsling was then eliminated in the third round of the British Wimbledon.
At the beginning of this year, Van de Zandschulp made his debut at the Australian Open in Melbourne, after which he also participated for the first time in Roland Garros and Wimbledon. He reached the second round in both Paris and London. At the US Open, Van de Zandschulp is now waiting for a match against the Argentinian Facundo Bagnis, who won on Wednesday against compatriot Marco Trungelliti.
