He Bosch ABS Pro which is aimed to be installed mainly on electric mountain bikes, is compatible with 3 ranges of brakes from the well-known German brand Magura.
ABS in electric bicycles is beginning to be the ‘target’ of the major brands of brakes or electronic systems for different reasons: eBikes are mounts that develop high speedsallow you to travel greater distancesand all with a top weight to what a bicycle without a motor would be.
and the Greater braking power is not always synonymous with achieving shorter distances when stopping a vehicle. According to the press release provided by Magura, “a study concluded that ABS for Bosch electric bicycles could have prevented the 29% of accidents with eBikes.”
The main thing pursued with an ABS is not extreme braking power, but rather, in difficult conditions (driving on low grip surfaces such as rocks, roots or mud) we can use that power in a controlled way.
Main features of the Magura ABS Pro by Bosch
- Front wheel anti-lock system: When we apply ‘full’ force to the brake levers, the brake components, in this case from Magura, are electronically controlled by the Bosch eBike ABS, reducing the braking pressure on the front wheel and preventing it from locking (braking). at intervals just as happens, for example, in a car).
- Lift control for rear wheel: the system reduces the possible lift of the rear wheel in the event of excessive braking of the front wheel.
- This ABS system is one of the so-called ‘passive’ ones: To achieve the desired effect, what the system does is discharge the hydraulic oil from the braking system into an auxiliary tank. This requires a large volume of hydraulic oil to be available within the system.
Magura has a lot of experience with ABS systems
Magura is not new to ABS. Regardless of whether it had already collaborated with Bosch in the past to jointly develop ABS for electric bicycles, the German firm has known the requirements of ABS systems for brake components for years.
For example, she is a long-time partner of BMW Motorrad, pioneer when it comes to ABS in motorcycles. “The similarity between Magura motorcycle and bicycle components cannot be overlooked,” the brand says in its information note.
Three braking ranges for ABS Pro
By 2025 there will be three ranges compatible with the ABS Pro system:
- Magura MT C: focused mainly on Cargo electric bicycles, touring and even mountain models with not excessively competitive aspirations.
- Magura MT 7: Its main destination is mountain eBikes in general, with various approaches to use.
- Magura Gustav Pro: intended for ‘full power’ electric bicycles, with ‘gravity’ approaches to use, where prolonged descents are a constant.
