The High Representative of the European Union diplomacy has asked the international community to “react” to the latest moves by Russia
The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has announced for this Wednesday the convening of an emergency meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Twenty-seven in response to the “serious escalation” in Russia after its president Vladimir Putin announced the mobilization of 300,000 reservists.
The highest representative of European diplomacy has called a press conference in New York – where he is to attend a series of events within the framework of the 77th United Nations General Assembly – to ask the international community to “react” to Putin’s latest movements, whom he accused hours before of putting the Twenty-seven in “an unacceptable situation”, he said after affirming that nuclear threats represent “a real danger for everyone” to which the international community “must react” and has advanced that possible new sanctions against Russia will be studied.
“We are not going to let them intimidate us. The international community has to react,” said Borrell, referring to the latest maneuvers by the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, with which he pointed out that the Foreign Ministers of the Twenty-seven will negotiate this Wednesday how to address the situation. In this sense, although without anticipating the possible result of the emergency session, the highest representative of European diplomacy has opted to “insist” on the “economic and individual” sanctions that the European Union has adopted to date.
non-belligerent
However, he has clarified that the European Union “is not belligerent” and “is not going to participate in the war”. “We are not going to participate in the war, we only support Ukraine, which is already a quite important effort,” she has said. Likewise, Borrell has opted for “doing political pedagogy” to explain the consequences of the war, the origin of the economic crisis worldwide. “Ukraine is being bombarded with missiles and the rest of the world is being bombarded by the increase in the price of electricity and food.”
“We have to embark on a war of narrative, which we are not going to win overnight,” acknowledged Borrell, who has placed special emphasis on making it known that the cause of the increase in the cost of living “is not the sanctions (on Russia), it is the war itself. Finally, he has warned that the possibility of a nuclear accident “is not ruled out”, even more so when Putin himself has threatened to use all his capacity. “When someone talks about ‘all’ of his capacity, he also includes the nuclear one,” warned Borrell.
