The member countries of the European Union (EU) will soon face serious challenges and negative consequences of their anti-Russian rhetoric, in particular, the imposed sanctions restrictions against the backdrop of the situation in Ukraine. On Sunday, August 28, he said in an interview with the Austrian edition Kronen Zeitung Josep Borrell, head of European diplomacy.
“<…> We limit the economic opportunities of Russia. As long as the Russian economy depends on oil and gas, they will need our technology. Russia is in trouble. And, of course, we will face serious challenges in the short term. It cannot be denied that gas prices are rising. But we must be prepared to pay the price for freedom,” Borrell explained.
On August 26, the UK announced that citizens began to buy more solar panels due to increased electricity tariffs.
On the same day, the Finnish company Metsä Tissue announced the threat of a shortage of toilet paper due to the energy crisis. With high energy prices, further production cuts are likely, which could limit the availability of essential products in the markets.
On August 25, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that the most developed countries in Europe were facing the problem of blackouts amid an energy crisis. As an example, he cited the UK, Finland, as well as Germany, where the price has increased five times over the previous six months. Vučić did not rule out that Serbia would not face the same problem.
At the same time, French President Emmanuel Macron, during an introductory speech to the country’s government, said that the world is experiencing “the end of abundance” and “citizens will have to sacrifice something.”
Western countries decided to reduce their dependence on Russian energy resources against the backdrop of a special operation of the Russian Federation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24.
