About to leave his position and while he is still in kyiv on one of his last trips as head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell has attacked Israel for the latest attacks on Gaza, which have left dozens dead. The high representative has accused Benjamin Netanyahu of violating international law by forcing displacement of the population and using hunger as a weapon of war.
“The words ethnic cleansing are increasingly used to describe what is happening in northern Gaza,” Borrell has warned in several messages published on the social network Israeli forces. Borrell recalled that UN reports point to famine in northern Gaza, which has practically been under siege for months.
“It is necessary to avoid this man-made catastrophe. “Israel, as an occupying power, has the obligation to act by allowing the entry of aid,” said Borrell, who has called on the international community and Israel’s “main allies” to take measures to “end the suffering of the Palestinians and for the release of the hostages” held by Hamas since the attacks of October 7 last year.
“It is necessary for all parties to act in a matter of days and not a week,” he urged in those messages published while he is still in Ukraine, in what will be his last trip to that country as high representative. There he had to remain for just over an hour in a shelter after alarms went off in practically the entire territory due to several Russian planes capable of launching missiles.
“For there to be peace and not just a ceasefire, it has to be fair and sustainable and this is a warning to those who say that because this war has to end we must end it as soon as possible no matter how,” Borrell told the media that accompanied him on his visit to the city of Cherníguiv, in the north of Ukraine, reports the EFE Agency. His words come after Donald Trump’s victory in the United States, which worries the EU, among other things, due to the possibility that he will stop supporting Ukraine and force a concession to Vladimir Putin.
