British Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed to step down on Thursday after 50 officials left the government in recent days, three of them in the last 24 hours. One of his closest allies, Treasury chief Nadhim Zahawi, asked the prime minister to step down “for the good of the country”.

“Prime Minister: This is not sustainable and it will only get worse: for you, for the Conservative Party and most importantly: for the whole country,” Zahawi said in a letter to Johnson.

Boris Johnson, 58, remained in power for nearly three years despite the criticism that surrounded him. But recent revelations that Johnson knew about the sexual harassment allegations against lawmaker Chris Pincher, before promoting him, were the final straw.

Johnson’s party has not yet said whether he will remain in the British executive until another name is assumed as prime minister. Throughout this Thursday, the official resignation speech should be made.
