Borghi confirms everything: “The President of the Republic cannot say certain things”. Salvini tries to put out the fire: “Respect for Mattarella”
The words of Sergio Mattarella on “European sovereignty” pronounced on the occasion of June 2nd have become the subject of criticism from representatives of the League. “It is Italian Republic Day And the sovereignty of our nation is consecrated. If the President really thinks that sovereignty belongs to the European Union instead of Italy, for consistency’s sake he should resignbecause its function would no longer make sense”, thundered Northern League senator Claudio Borghi. His words were condemned by several political leaders. “We are not asking for anyone’s resignation“, then pointed out the Northern League leader, Matteo Salvini.
Claudio Borghi but the day after the controversy with the head of state he is not backing down on Sergio Mattarella’s request for resignation: “Like all things there is always an if – specifies the representative of the League on Radio 24. I said a banality that I confirmif one on the day of Republic Day it consecrates EU sovereignty that’s no good. It is then consecrated piece of sovereignty that we have ceded to Europe. But in our constitution there is no question of transfer of sovereignty. Our constitution does not provide for the transfer of sovereignty. When Mattarella didn’t give the job to Paolo Savona how Minister of Economysaid that it was not possible that someone who criticizes the euro can occupy that role, who should first run for office and express his political ideas. But whoever votes for me – concludes Borghi – says exactly this, what is needed more Italy and less Europe“.
Words which, however, clash with those that the Northern League leader Salvini pronounced this morning on Rai: “No controversy towards the President of the Republic who has my respect, the respect of the League and that of the Italians, respect that other European leaders and presidents who risk dragging Italy into the third world war do not have“, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Matteo Salvini interviewed on Agorà on Rai Tre regarding the controversy of 2 June. “If we had delegated other powers to the EU, today Macron and those like him who would like to attack and bomb would decide”, while ” Italy in its Constitution repudiates war”, added the leader of the League.
