The beloved video game series of Borderlands is the next to get its adaptation to the big screen. This August 8th, a film inspired by its world and characters will be released by director Eli Roth who seems to be giving us a combination of the story of his first two games.
Although video game adaptations have been on a very good run lately, we are still in doubt regarding Borderlands. After all, it seems that it has as many points in its favor as against it. Here we share with you the reasons why this film might excite or worry you.
The positive and negative points of Borderlands before its release
First reason to worry about Borderlands: its director (or rather, its directors)
The movie of Borderlands It was directed mostly by Eli Roth. This director has been around for quite some time with films more focused on horror and explicit violence. That last point could work for this adaptation, as the games are quite violent.
However, just because Eli Roth puts a lot of this into his films doesn’t mean they’re good. In fact, most of his work has received a very mixed reception. While these Gearbox games don’t need an Oscar-winning director, they could do with someone with a more consistent career, either.
And if that was not enough, Borderlands had extensive reshoots to change elements of its story. Due to Eli Roth’s prior commitments, he was unable to direct these reshoots. In his place was director Tim Miller, responsible for the first of Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fatewho took the reins.
Tim Miller has experience with action and touches of comedy. However, it is not entirely his vision that we will see in this adaptation, but rather something that he got on board halfway. We’ve seen in the past that having two different directors at different stages of production can result in a product with little cohesion. We’ll see if we can survive this.
Its screenwriter could be a point in favor of the adaptation
There is a saying in cinema that goes like this: ‘A good script can save a bad director, but a good director cannot save a bad script.. This could apply to Borderlands, whose screenwriter already has one of the best miniseries of all time and a very successful video game adaptation under his belt.
The film was written by Craig Mazin. You may be familiar with his name as he was the writer and showrunner of the HBO miniseries Chernobyl. This production opened the doors for him to take charge of the adaptation of The Last of Us which had a successful first season and already has a second one on the way.
Although this pair of series have a very serious tone that might not fit very well with BorderlandsCraig Mazin also has experience with comedy. After all he was one of the writers of Scary Movie 3 and the Apple TV sitcom, Mythic Quest. If you’ve seen any of these productions, you’ll know there’s plenty of potential for laughs.
One negative point regarding the scriptwriter is that When the reshoots came they called someone else, who they haven’t revealed, to rewrite some scenes. So again, we won’t be seeing absolutely everything Craig Mazin had in mind for this movie.
Its trailers show plenty of action and irreverence just like the Borderlands games.
Now let’s move on to the question of your progress so far. The reality is that it is noticeable that they capture very well a couple of the most recognized elements of Borderlands: crazy action and irreverent humor. Plus there’s some good chemistry between the cast so far.
We can also see that they tried to give us a fairly faithful and colorful recreation of the planet Pandora. All the settings seem to come straight from the video games and you can even tell that there will be some secondary characters much loved by fans.
The trailers themselves already show us that they don’t stick much to the story.
While the trailers seem irreverent, with lots of action and scenarios similar to those in the game, they also indicate something worrying. It seems that they will not completely follow the story of the video games and will change certain crucial aspects of their characters. Especially Tiny Tina who will now be the key to everything.
This makes us worry that they will go the way of other adaptations such as resident Evil either Street Fighter. They may just take the name of Borderlands and some characters to do something totally different. All because of a lack of confidence in the source material.
Although their stories are not the best in the industry, they do have a lore and characters much loved by fans that seem like they will not make it to the big screen. Among them the rest of the vault hunters and the charismatic villain that is Handsome Jack. Or are they saving it for a possible sequel?
Also, as I mentioned a few paragraphs ago, it’s already evident that they’re going to do an amalgamation between the first two games. Doctor Tannis, Claptrap, Lilith and Rowland are the protagonists of the first one while Krieg and Tiny Tina are characters that we saw until the sequel.. I hope it doesn’t turn out like this Welcome to Raccoon City where they tried to adapt two games at the same time with depressing results.
The actors who will bring the characters of Borderlands to life do not look much like their video game counterparts
Another factor that shows us that they want to do their own thing is the choice of their stars. Although they did a great job in characterization, their physical appearances are very different from those of the video game characters, with the exception of Krieg and Claptrap.
Doctor Tannis and Lilith in the video games are very young women while in the film they are already shown to be very mature. Roland is a strong, tall and brave soldier who does not hesitate when facing danger, but here they chose actor Kevin Hart who lacks several of these characteristics. Tiny Tina is not so little anymore, because instead of a little girl with a tendency towards madness, it seems that we will only be given a young adult with a lot of energy.
The cast has already shown its worth in other works
Of course, these changes in physical appearance could be forgiven if their actors do a really good job of portraying them. Something that could happen if we go by the renown of some of its actors and actresses in the main roles, as well as their past works.
The cast includes Oscar winners Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis, although only Curtis has experience in action-packed films with a bit of comedy. Maybe they can surprise us by giving the characters some depth.
Kevin Hart may not have many acting awards, but he has made a name for himself in the world of comedy. He also doesn’t shy away from films with some action, as we must not forget his roles in Jumanji either A Newbie in Trouble. It may not look like Roland but there may be no shortage of laughs. Borderlands thanks to him.
Finally we have Jack Black who already surprised us last year in Super Mario Bros. The Movie by lending his voice to Bowser. His energy could be just what Claptrap needs to bring all the madness in his circuits to the big screen. In fact, the progress already shows that it will do an interesting job.
Of course we don’t know for sure if these actors willingly agreed to appear in Borderlands or if they were legal obligations. If so, then there is a chance that they will not put in the effort and will just act to get this commitment off their chest.
With all these points, do you think that the movie Borderlands be it a success or a failure?
