A small, big journey into a delicate and fascinating fantasy world, dedicated to the discovery and silence of a playful experience that does not suffer from concepts such as haste or chaos at all. As you will read in our preview, Book of Travels is just that, a title conceived, developed and published by Might and Delight, a team that has already signed very special titles such as Shelter, The Blue Flamingo, Meadow and many others, often with animals as protagonists, in the name of survival. The idea of the team – which allowed them to achieve a moderate level of success in the indie parterre – is to represent emotionally overwhelming realities, with engaging characterizations and always very thin and refined graphic styles. In the case of Book of Travels, we want to start our preview with a small definition given by Might and Delight to describe the experience given by their new RPG: “Ready your pack, grab your walking stick and step into a world of mystery and legend. Craft a unique character and immerse yourself in the enchanted lands of Braided Shore.“A delicate invitation to fully enjoy your run, taking your time and building a character capable of accompanying us along our complicated journey.
Book of Travels is a product that caught our attention from the very first moment, both for the beauty of the places on the screen and for the layering of the gameplay which hides much more than one might think at first superficial glance. Searching, observing, finding secrets and planning your movements is essential within the run, but we will talk about this in detail later. For now we can only advise you to make yourself comfortable, take a cup of any hot drink and welcome this preview of early access with the same serenity and attention that you should dedicate to the game.
The light colors of an impressionist-looking RPG
Before going into the details of what is actually done in Book of Travels, in the preview we believe it is right to give space to the setting, to the atmospheres that fill the Might and Delight product. We have played many RPGs, often similar to each other but also varied in the proposal of the world that has been put before us. On this, however, today’s game undoubtedly has a little extra gear, which starts from the so refined style that distinguishes the development house. The first sensation – even just looking at the trailer or the gameplay of about 30 minutes – is that of find yourself catapulted into a map perfectly poised between a minimalist cartoon and a painting straight out of the Impressionist period. A marvel for the eyes in all respects: in the colors that excel – from green to dark gray or blue – up to the “brushstrokes” that make up the image. The care of what we see on the screen is impressive, every detail is well finished and the places, temples, stations or shops are perfectly inserted into the map.
Traveling in the world of Book of Travels, one almost feels the sensation of being in a boundless world, invaded by the calm and the sound of one’s footsteps which are the only thing that matters. Everything else is a palette that changes according to our decisions, what we prefer, how we implement it. The other equally fundamental side is that of personalization and your own “travel book”, which we will talk about in more detail shortly. The choice of your character is much more accurate than you might expect from an indie game like this: starting, we will open this huge ancient tome and choose form, skills, character and physical appearance of the individual who will continue in the digital world with us. The various features are not particularly intuitive to manage, but with a couple of minutes of patience you understand where to go. In most sections, as this is their own travel book, it will be possible to write personally what we prefer: the lore of our character, his past, where he comes from and so on. Which makes the experience even more exciting, allowing us not only to choose but also to implement by hand, writing short texts that allow us to create a true story at the foundations of everything: a choice that we greatly appreciated and that drags the player. in the product, 100%.
Equally crucial to the atmosphere created by the game is the splendid and immersive soundtrack that will kidnap you without you even noticing. It will be a very quick encounter with the various songs, starting from the menu: we can assure you that in order to relax and literally remain projected into the world of videogames, the choice to create this overwhelming – and at the same time delicate – soundtrack has bewitched us in the deep and in part reminded us of the equally impactful one of Journey. We put the link of one of the official songs, to allow you to get in the right mood.
An RPG not to be underestimated
It starts from anywhere on Braided Shore, a land dense with nature in which everyone lives their own life, cultivating, selling, building. The beauty lies in starting this journey without being in a hurry and the need to understand everything immediately: talking with the NPCs or with the online players will be the basis of understanding the RPG. Thanks to these conversations it will be easy to discover little gems or cleverly hidden secrets around the map. Exploration is the real main theme of your run, and every detail has its own importance.
Since it is important to learn from every chat, as well as from every misstep or right, it will be essential to use your own book and write down the fundamental elements not to be forgotten. Everything gives us the impression of being fully masters of the adventure and every decision has its own weight for this. Book f Travels early access is truly a great starting point: we have not encountered errors of any kind, the only flaw is the lack of the Italian language that does not allow those who do not know the language well to play (since we are talking about very specific terms). We are curious to see how the excellent path of the Might and Delight title will continue.
