The Police affirm that “for the moment” it cannot be affirmed that the attack, in which one person has died, was directed against the former Minister of Infrastructure
The candidate for governor of Sao Paulo supported by the president, Jair Bolsonaro, had to interrupt a visit to a favela on Monday due to a shooting. The authorities have not determined “for the moment” if the attack was directed against Tarcísio de Freitas, former Minister of Infrastructure and aspiring to lead the most populous and richest state in Brazil.
According to the Brazilian media, the shooting occurred when a group of people on motorcycles crossed paths with the police delegation that was escorting De Freitas. The Secretary of Public Security of Sao Paulo, Joao Camilo Pires, explained that “the shooting occurs more or less at a distance of between 50 and 100 meters from where the candidate’s team was”, who was visiting university facilities in the community.
According to the official’s account, the exchange of gunfire “scared everyone and interrupted the event.” The police forces carried out “withdrawal” of those present “to preserve their safety.” No member of the entourage of Bolsonaro’s candidate, nor police officer, was injured during the confrontation, which caused the death of a person “with a history of robbery.”
However, De Freitas himself posted on his social media that he had been “attacked” by “criminals.” Bolsonaro has also reacted. “Everything is still preliminary, I don’t want to anticipate (…) This event today, whether or not it is against you, is a sign that you have to worry even more about your safety,” he said.
De Freitas will dispute the governorship of Sao Paulo with Fernando Haddad, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s dolphin, in the second round of the elections, on October 30, when Bolsonaro and the leftist will face each other for the presidency.
