BRASILIA (Reuters) – Amid the return of strike threats by truck drivers due to rising fuel prices, President Jair Bolsonaro announced Thursday that the government will offer some 750,000 self-employed truck drivers help to offset the increase in fuel prices. diesel price.
“We decided then – the numbers will be presented in the next few days –, we are going to serve autonomous truck drivers, around 750,000 truck drivers will receive help to offset the increase in diesel,” he said.
“We do this because it is through them that goods and food reach the four corners of the country,” explained the president shortly thereafter, in a speech at the inauguration event of the Ramal do Agreste, in the interior of Pernambuco.
Bolsonaro did not give details of the measure, saying only that in difficult times the government will not leave anyone behind. He acknowledged the high price of fuel, but noted that a considerable part of the input consumed in Brazil is imported and “we have to pay their price abroad”.
This morning, in Rio de Janeiro, there was a movement of truck drivers transporting fuel, the tankers, to prevent trucks from entering the fuel supply bases in Campos Elíseos, in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The units have closed their doors to avoid turmoil and depredations, the Union of Retail Trade of Fuels, Lubricants and Convenience Stores of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro said in a statement on Thursday.
Bolsonaro’s most recent announcement of a government expenditure accelerated the fall of the Ibovespa, which, at 2:46 pm, was down 3.67%, to 106,766 points, a new intraday low in 2021. The new initiative comes at a time when the market it had already been reacting negatively to the possibility of the government breaking the spending ceiling to pay for the new Bolsa Família.
In the speech, Bolsonaro repeated that it was agreed that the Auxílio Brasil, a substitute for Bolsa Família, would be 400 reais, but again he did not report where the government would take the funds to finance it.
The president attributed the fuel inflation to the consequences of the policy of social isolation to contain the pandemic. According to him, the “stay at home” would be an attempt to break the economy and has been charging a high price with the rise in prices.
Over the weekend, three national organizations of workers linked to the cargo transport sector had announced the decision to declare a state of strike and that the start of a national strike from November 1st if the federal government does not meet the demands that go back to the stoppage of the truck drivers in 2018.
Among the demands, one of the main ones is precisely the cost of fuel, readjusted upwards several times in recent months by Petrobras. The average price of diesel in the country has risen by more than 50% this year.
