Colombia’s new president proposed measure in speech on Sunday (19.jun); Brazilian government has not yet recognized victory
The president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) criticized on Monday night (June 20, 2022) the elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, for suggest the reduction of the country’s prison population with the release of young detainees. In a conversation with supporters at Palácio da Alvorada, Bolsonaro said that the measure will be copied in Brazil if the former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (EN) be elected in October.
“Did you see today’s speech by the new president of Colombia? [Ele disse que vai] Release all the trapped boys, everyone. Lula will release the little boys who killed someone over a cell phone to have a beer”, he stated.
Petro’s statement on Sunday (June 19) was the target of attacks from the Bolsonarista base on social media, which compared the former guerrilla to the PT figure. The candidate of the Historic Pact won the 2nd round of the presidential elections in Colombia with 50.44% of the votes, against 47.31% for the rightist Rodolfo Hernández, known in the country as “Colombian Trump”. The Brazilian government has not yet publicly acknowledged the victory.
In his speech after the official results were released, Petro mentioned the past of conflicts in the country and asked the Colombian attorney general Francisco Barbosa for the release of the youths. “How many people died, how many people are imprisoned today, how many young people in handcuffs, treated like criminals just because they had hope, just because they had love. I ask the nation’s attorney general to release our youth”, said the leftist.
