BRASILIA (Reuters) – President Jair Bolsonaro said, in an interview with RedeTV, that he intends to participate in any debates scheduled for the 2022 presidential elections, unlike what took place in 2018.
“I intend to participate in debates. I could not participate in the last (election) because I was still convalescing. For my part there will be no war. I have a four-year term to show what I’ve done. Now, I cannot accept provocation. Personal things, because then you escape the purpose of a good debate”, said Bolsonaro in an excerpt of the interview that will be aired in full on Thursday.
In 2018, Bolsonaro was only in the first debate, which did not have the participation of any PT candidate. At the time, the party still insisted on the name of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who was in prison, and Fernando Haddad, who ended up being the candidate, was a candidate for vice president.
After being attacked with a knife in early September of that year, Bolsonaro could not participate in any debates in the first round. In the second, he was released by the doctors, but he chose not to face Fernando Haddad in the debates marked by TV Record and Globo, alleging discomfort. At the time, he was still wearing a colostomy bag, removed in a new surgery in 2019.
Bolsonaro, however, sets conditions for his participation. He says he accepts to discuss his mandate and even his personal life, but he does not want family and friends involved in the political discussion.
“I hope that the television channels that by chance organize the debate will take this issue to the letter. It’s to talk about my mandate. Even my private life is at ease, but don’t get into family, friends, things that won’t lead anywhere,” he said.
Two of his children, senator Flávio and councilor Carlos, are being investigated in cracks. Flávio, from the time he was state deputy in Rio de Janeiro, and Carlos, already in the position of councilor, who has held for four terms. Both deny any involvement.
Michelle, Bolsonaro’s wife, received 84,000 reais in her bank account from Fabrício Queiroz, a friend of Bolsonaro accused of being the organizer of the split scheme in Flávio’s office in the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj).
