Bolsonaro not liked in Padua. Friars of Sant’Antonio disappear
The visit of the president of Brazil is now a national case Bolsonaro to Padua to receive the honorary citizenship of Anguillara, a Venetian village that was the birthplace of his great-grandfather. The decision was made by the junta of the League, which administers the town. Bolsonaro – reads the press – will be in Italy over the weekend to participate in the G20 in Rome and has expressed the desire to also visit Padua and the basilica of Sant’Antonio. But this decision did not please the friars. To Monsignor Claudio Cipolla, the decision to give him honorary citizenship did not go down. The style is plush, but the content is unequivocal: the honor “has created a lot of embarrassment for us,” reads the statement from the Diocese.
Bolsonaro – continues La Stampa – would like to combine the visit to the town of his ancestors with the visit to the basilica of Sant’Antonio, of which he says he is a devotee. But even in Padua he is not too grateful. The diocese has officially taken the position it has seen; the friars of the basilica say unofficially that there will be no delegation to welcome him, in short, Bolsonaro will do his devotions as a simple faithful. And the mayor of the capital, Sergio Giordani, center-left, makes it known that he is not planning a meeting and that his agenda is already full on Monday.
