Bolsonaro was admitted to the Armed Forces Hospital (HFA), in Brasília, in the early morning hours of Wednesday (14) and diagnosed with intestinal obstruction. After the first exams, the president was transferred in the early evening to take additional exams in the capital of São Paulo to verify the need for emergency surgery.
Who assumes the presidency
According to the Federal Constitution, the vice president of the Republic assumes the presidency in the absence of the president. As vice president Hamilton Mourão left this Wednesday afternoon for Luanda, Angola, to participate in the Summit of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP).
If the president needs surgery and has to leave, until the return of the deputy, the position would be in charge of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-PL), next in the line of succession. However, according to Metropoles, there are divergences on the matter in the legal field, since the Federal Supreme Court (STF) established an understanding preventing defendants from assuming the Presidency of Brazil.
If Lira is prevented from taking over the Planalto, the role would fall to Rodrigo Pacheco (DEM-MG), president of the Senate, and, ultimately, if Pacheco cannot for some reason, assume the president of the STF, Luiz Fux.
Bolsonaro may choose not to give up the job, just as he did when he had to remove a bladder stone last September.
