A group of environmental lawyers denounced the president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro for “crimes against humanity”, because of his choices on the Amazon
A substantial 286-page dossier was presented to the International Criminal Court of The Hague to denounce the alleged “crimes against humanity” of the president of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro.
The initiative comes from the Austrian NGO AllRise, which argues that Bolsonaro’s policies would represent an attack on the Amazon, with repercussions not only on the “inhuman suffering inflicted on the region, but also on the entire global population”.
According to the environmental organization, the environmental policy of the far-right leader has led to an increase in deforestation in the Amazon, the destruction of the forest and the organisms and individuals that protect it.
The plaintiffs estimate that changes in the biome during the Bolsonaro administration could be responsible for 180,000 indirect deaths in this century due to rising global temperatures.
According to the document, the Amazon today emits more carbon dioxide than it can absorb.
“In the complaint we present evidence showing that Bolsonaro’s actions have a direct connection with the negative consequences of climate change around the world,” explains the founder of AllRise. Johannes Wesemann.
