BRASILIA (Reuters) – President Jair Bolsonaro has decided to recreate the Ministry of Labour, now a special secretariat of the Ministry of Economy, in a small ministerial reform he plans and intends to hand over the new portfolio to Onyx Lorenzoni, current minister of the General Secretariat of Presidency, according to two sources heard by Reuters.
The move is part of government moves to try to please the center at a time of government weakness, which faces corruption allegations, Covid’s CPI in the Senate and a drastic drop in popularity.
According to one of the sources, despite the resistance of Economy Minister Paulo Guedes, in dividing his portfolio, he ended up agreeing to give up work.
“What has been said is that this is an area that has already been resolved,” said the source.
Onyx met with Guedes this morning in Economics to discuss the change, sources said.
The division of the Ministry of Economy is one of the center’s demands on Bolsonaro. The group of congressmen who now guarantee the government’s base asked for the separation of areas such as Labor and Foreign Trade, but Guedes resists changes.
The president himself confirmed, in an interview to a radio this Wednesday morning, that he will make a “small ministerial change”.
Among these changes is the departure of Luiz Eduardo Ramos to the General Secretariat –hence the need to move Onyx– to open the Civil House for a name from the Senate. At the moment, according to sources, the most likely name is Senator Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI).
Party president, Ciro is considered a key name in securing support for the government in Congress.
