President Jair Bolsonaro said on Friday (19) that news warning of irreversible destruction of the Amazon is “syrupy”, a day after official estimates reveal record deforestation in the forest in 15 years.
“Is there illegal deforestation? Have. It’s just that other countries don’t buy (sic) our wood. It’s simple,” said the president in his weekly live.
“Is there illegal burning? Have. But that’s not what they say out there. And we fight it. Now, some say, ‘ah, you have to fight more’… Do you know the size of the Amazon?”, he added.
Bolsonaro did not refer directly to the data released on Thursday by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), which estimate deforestation of 13,235 km² between August 2020 and July 2021, an increase of 22% compared to the previous period and the worst level in 15 years.
But he criticized what he called “lies” about the destruction of the Amazon, 60% of which are in Brazil.
“While we struggle like a disgrace to take Brazil’s good name abroad, bad Brazilians go out of Brazil to criticize Brazil. Telling lies about the Amazon, for example,” said the president.
“Look at the article now: ‘Amazon is close to an irreversible point and could turn into a desert.’ Same old syrup. Matter mostly sponsored by Brazilians, who are working against their country”, he added.
The increase in deforestation in the period 2020-2021, the third annual increase during the Bolsonaro government, calls into question Brazil’s promise to reverse this trend and eliminate illegal deforestation by 2028, as pledged at the last United Nations climate conference , the COP26.
The government is accused of having deliberately delayed the release of data until after COP26 to avoid further international criticism, which blames it for promoting these highs by weakening inspection in the biome and with its speech in favor of extractive activities in protected areas.
According to scientists, several places on the planet are exposed to decisive moments, turning points that can affect the entire ecosystem of the planet.
The Amazon forest may undergo a process of “savannization”, which would irremediably affect the planet’s ability to absorb CO2.
