The American aircraft manufacturer Boeing has settled for 225 million dollars (more than 194 million euros) in a lawsuit that was filed by shareholders. That writes the American daily The Wall Street Journal Thursday evening, based on insider information. According to shareholders, Boeing’s board of directors did not adequately supervise the safety of the 737 MAX, one of the aircraft manufacturer’s aircraft models. As part of the settlement, Boeing would also pledge to appoint an internal ombudsman and a board member with aviation safety experience.
The settlement will The Wall Street Journal will be filed Friday and is unlikely to contain an admission of board misconduct. Boeing previously tried to stop the lawsuit, but in September a judge in the US state of Delaware ruled that the case should go ahead. With the settlement, which has not yet been officially confirmed by Boeing, the lawsuit will still not go ahead.
In 2018, two 737 MAX planes, one from Lion Air and one from Ethiopian Airlines, crashed. 346 people were killed. The cause of the crashes turned out to be a malfunctioning computer system on board. This caused the nose of the aircraft to be pushed down at the wrong time. All 737 MAX aircraft were grounded for more than a year after the accidents.
