The German car brand BMW denied his interest in acquiring the brand McLaren Automotive. The Bavarian manufacturer has therefore nipped in the bud, the indiscretion on a negotiation with the British company specializing in sports cars. In the past few hours, several authoritative newspapers had re-launched a possible interest of BMW and Audi in the Woking house, and for both situations the context and purpose of this purchase opportunity was not clear.
The news agency Reuters however reported the negative voice of BMW, who described the previous report as ‘incorrect’. No negotiations, therefore, for the Germans, who with McLaren had actively collaborated with Ron Dennis and Gordon Murray for the F1 project, during the nineties.
From Audi does not come a sharp denial, but we can safely talk about the downsizing of the ‘rumors’. The Ingolstadt company said it was a possibility regarding possible collaborations or technical cooperation contracts, specifying that it regularly evaluates proposals arriving from the automotive sector. However, he did not mention McLaren and therefore also in this case there is no manager or spokesperson who has confirmed ongoing negotiations.
McLaren Automotive is currently neither officially nor unofficially for sale, but the automotive world is aware of the company’s financial difficulties during 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic forced layoffs and downsizing. However, thanks to new projects, McLaren now looks healthier and is taking steps to enter a future that will be increasingly electrified.
It should be remembered that Audi is part of the Volkswagen group, a company which is already abundantly represented in the premium / sports segment (with Porsche, Audi itself, Lamborghini, Bentley) and which has just entrusted Bugatti to Rimac. In the case of BMW, on the other hand, it would have been difficult to put a brand as closely linked to F1 as McLaren into its group.
