Reducing CO2 emissions throughout the supply and production chain is one of BMW’s primary goals. For this reason the German group has decided to significantly increase the use of low carbon steel in series production in European plants: thanks to the agreement signed with Salzgitter AG, in fact, BMW will receive delivery of low-carbon steel starting from 2026, with Salzgitter AG and H2 Green Steel which will satisfy more than 40% of the steel demand for standard production in the group’s EU plants.
In this way, the savings will be around 400,000 tons of CO2 per year by 2030, with the steel remnants of the factories that will be reused within the consolidated circular economy. Joachim Post, member of the BMW AG Board of Management responsible for the Purchasing and Supplier Network, commented: “This is an important step in substantially reducing CO2 emissions at source in the supplier network. Our goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of the vehicle life cycle through a holistic approach. In particular, we are cutting edge in the procurement of low carbon steel and we are paving the way for our factories in Europe ”. As mentioned, Salzgitter AG becomes the BMW Group’s second low-carbon steel supplier, after the company had already reached an agreement with the Swedish startup H2 Green Steel.
“Salzgitter AG is putting the circularity at the heart of its new strategy – added Gunnar Groebler, CEO of Salzgitter AG – We firmly believe that closed cycles of recoverable materials can only achieve concrete results thanks to solid partners. We are delighted to cooperate with the BMW Group in the area of the circular economy and are proud of the agreement for the supply of green steel close with our longtime customer. ‘Partnering for Transformation’, this is how we will implement our new corporate vision “.
