After Pop and Rock, Blues was presented: this is the Trenitalia’s first hybrid regional trainwhich thanks to a triple power supply (electric, battery and diesel) should allow a 50% reduction in fuel consumption, as well as a significant reduction of CO2 emissions compared to current diesel vehicles. A total of 110 Blues trains will travel on the railway lines of Valle d’Aosta, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Tuscany, Lazio, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia. The first deliveries are expected starting this year in Tuscany.
Hybrid trains are an absolute novelty for Italy: they will be destined to the secondary lines, that is to those not electrified, on which currently only diesel trains run. These are convoys usually with an average age of over 30 years, particularly polluting and uncomfortable by current standards. The trains purchased by the FS Italiane Group will be manufactured in Hitachi Rail’s Italian factories, located in Pistoia, Naples and Reggio Calabria.
According to what Il Sole 24 Ore reports, “the economic amount of the Trenitalia-Hitachi framework agreement is 1.6 billion for the supply of up to 135 new hybrid regional trains. The Pop trains, on the other hand, are manufactured, also in Italy, by the competitor Alstom“.
In 2022 the new hybrid train will arrive on the non-electrified lines of the Sienese basin, the Faenza basin and the Val di Sieve. Of the 110 new Blues, 44 will be in operation in Tuscany: the Region has staked a lot on this long-awaited technological renewal. From a technical point of view, these trains can reach 160 kilometers per hour and accommodate up to 300 people seated in the composition of four carriages; if desired, there is the possibility of offering an area dedicated to children, and it would be a big news for families considering the current offer of trains in our country.
The internal and external LED lighting system, the intelligent management of consumption of the air conditioning system and the Green Drive (driver information system) and Smart Parking functions allow to reduce energy consumption to a minimum. The positioning of the traction components on the roof of the train is also an advantage in favor of the larger interior spaces.
