After his meeting with the German Foreign Minister in Berlin, the US Secretary of State affirmed that they prioritize the diplomatic channel to lower the tension between Russians and Ukrainians, but did not hesitate to clarify that they will act immediately in the event of aggression from Moscow, clarifying the sayings of President Joe Biden that generated confusion. Meanwhile, he referred to “modest progress” in talks with Iran over the resumption of the agreement on the nuclear program.
This Thursday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken continued his tour of Europe with the mission of reducing the harshness between Russia and Ukraine. After meeting with the Ukrainian high command in Kiev last Wednesday, he had a conclave with the Trasatlantic Quad in Berlin. He later maintained contact with the media with the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock.
The United States Secretary of State insisted that they must continue on “the diplomatic path to de-escalate the tension” between Russia and Ukraine. However, he clarified that both the North American power and its European allies will not hesitate to carry out a “united, rapid and massive” response in the event that “some Russian military force crosses the border with Ukraine and commits new acts of aggression.”
In this way, Blinken clarified the criticized statements of President Joe Biden, who expressed that “a minor incursion” by Russia would provoke an inferior response, something that generated confusion about the real position of the United States and its NATO allies.
Beyond the warnings, Blinken stressed that the way out of these confrontations can be achieved “through dialogue and not aggression.” At the rally, held in the German capital, he met with Foreign Ministers Jean-Yves Le Drian –from France-, Germany’s Baerbock and Deputy Secretary James Cleverly, from the United Kingdom.
