Margaret Tate is a cynical Canadian-born publisher who works in New York with her assistant Andrew Paxton. Margaret exploits her assistant in every way humanly possible. Each morning Andrew brings her coffee and answers her calls, while she is put up with by her employees, who exchange sightings of the woman by internal mail to prepare for the worst. One day, however, Margaret is informed by her boss that she will have to leave the United States and return to Canada because her visa has expired: in order not to be fired, the woman then claims that she will marry Andrew, even if it is not true. Shortly after this statement and Andrew’s colleagues laugh at him, the two go to the immigration office to confirm the wedding. Andrew, initially reluctant, gives in to Margaret’s blackmail who threatens to fire him, while he, in turn, accepts on condition that she, at the end of the farce, names him editor and so she accepts too. Because of Bob Spolding, a former employee who was fired by Margaret, the two are questioned and Andrew in particular is threatened with a $ 250,000 fine and five years in federal prison if the engagement is done just to get the Green Card to. Margaret.
