Compared to the bizarre wrangling of the conservatives, Marine Le Pen seems like the serious grande dame in a political kindergarten. A Merkur commentary by Klaus Rimpel.
Jean-Marie Le Pen had made it easy for the French conservatives: it was unthinkable for politicians in the tradition of Charles de Gaulle to collude with the far-right party that Le Pen had founded together with former SS man Pierre Bousquet.
On her ambitious path to power, Marine Le Pen has distanced herself from her own Nazi father. But even if she doesn’t make trivializing remarks about the Nazi era, the Le Pen troop still does not stand for conservative values in the spirit of de Gaulle.
It is about France’s future in the Western, democratic value system
No matter how much chalk Marine Le Pen eats: Your France, which trivializes Putin and NATO-membership would be a nightmare, even for us Germans. In this respect, the drama currently unfolding in Paris is understandable: for the French conservatives, who literally locked out their party leader Éric Ciotti, it is about more than just party tactics. It is about France’s future in the western, democratic value system.
Only Marine Le Pen can be happy about Ciotti’s tinkering with the firewall. Compared to the bizarre wrangling of the conservatives, she seems like the serious grande dame in a political kindergarten. The conservative power struggle that is getting out of control is helping the right-wing radicals achieve their main goal: de-demonization. Ciotti has certainly convinced some of the conservative voters to support Le Pen. (Klaus Rimpel)
