5 accessories from bygone eras that are now gone
The first particular accessory I want to talk to you about are the chopinea kind of platform style shoe which was used by Italian noble women in Renaissance period. In truth, these shoes were introduced for the first time in Spain and only later did they spread to Italy. If you imagine an elegant platform shoe today, the platform tends to be no more than a couple of centimeters high, whereas in that period they could reach heights of over 50 centimetres. Chopines were not only used to beautify women, but also to distinguish them different social classes.
As far as men’s fashion is concerned, inRenaissance Europe there existed the codpiecethat is, one padded cover which was positioned over the trousers at the groin and which was initially used as a closure for the trousers themselves. After a short time, however, it took on the meaning of virility and social statusto then be embroidered with jewels, ornaments and other frills.
This kind of accessories was commonly used by those who wanted to show their high social rank by distinguishing themselves from the lower classes, and in the same way also the ruffa wide and gathered collar popular during the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe, it had this function. This collar was usually made of material such as linen or lace and had a rigid shape that expanded over time until it reached approximately 30cm in size.
Perhaps one of the best-known accessories of all time are the wigs which were used in France during the reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Defined as tower wigs, they were so called because they could reach impressive heights and were often decorated with feathers, jewels, ribbons, but also miniatures of objects, everyday scenes or stuffed animals. Very often they requested long hours to accomplish and a support to be able to carry them on the head, given that they really weighed a lot.
Finally, as regards women’s fashion, inVictorian age had spread there crinolinethat is, a stiff underskirt which was made with horsehair, hence the name, and steel. It was used to give a wider and more circular shape to skirts and, although it was truly loved by women of the time, it risked getting entangled easily, or caused difficulty in sitting down and even endangered the life of the wearer, since it could easily catch fire.
Which of these do you think is the most unique accessory? And how many you know others?
