Even after the violent storms, the thunderstorm potential in Germany remains high. The usual heat phase at the beginning of August does not seem to have materialized.
Munich – “If the dog days are hot, it stays white for a long time in winter” – this is an old farmer’s rule. The dog days are not a meteorological phenomenon per se. In the usual period between July 23rd and August 23rd, it usually gets particularly warm or even hot in Germany every year. In 2020 there were tropical nights and up to 38 degrees. We are currently a long way from that.
But the year 2021 would not be the year 2021 if everything didn’t turn out a little differently than expected. Although the German Weather Service is expecting less extreme weather conditions after the heavy storms of the past few weeks, it could still be cold and wet in August.
Cold shock in August: DWD warns of thunderstorms in the north and south – summer remains cold
Also on this Monday, Tief DIRK is swirling the weather in Germany and causing numerous showers and thunderstorms!

Even the 30-degree mark will hardly be reached by August 10, predicts meteorologist Dominik Jung von wetter.net. “At the beginning of August, the maximum values even drop below 25, sometimes below 20 degrees. At night we reach values around or even below 10 degrees. You could almost start using the heating, ”fears the expert.
The thunderstorm potential also remains high for the time being. The DWD wrote on Twitter on Monday. Especially in the north and northeast as well as parts of the south there is again increased potential for severe weather due to heavy rain. 20-40 l / m2 There could be precipitation per hour. Only in the north-east does more water come from the sky in some areas. Hail and squalls are also possible.
This trend is sustaining and picking up again at the end of the week. Numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected here, especially in the north and south. According to the DWD, the maximum values remain at 21 to 25 degrees. So it looks bad for the dog days in Germany at the moment. Meanwhile, in southern Europe, the extreme weather is going in the other direction. Severe forest fires broke out in Sardinia at the weekend. (vs)
