It has been speculated for a long time whether corona vaccinations need to be refreshed. A vaccine manufacturer is now taking a clear stance. The EMA is also reacting.
Munich – The vaccinations against the corona virus are in full swing in Germany. After a shortage of vaccines in the meantime, there are now enough vaccines in the Federal Republic and thus enough dates for the corona vaccinations.
Most of the Germans were given the vaccine by Biontech / Pfizer. The manufacturer announced in an official announcement that its vaccine will probably lose its effectiveness after six months.
Corona vaccine from Biontech loses its effect after half a year – refreshment should help
“As already clear from the practical application data collected by the Israeli Ministry of Health, the protective effect of the vaccine against infections and symptomatic diseases decreases six months after the second vaccination,” it said there. The Mainz-based company and its US partner Pfizer therefore expect the corona vaccination to be refreshed. The findings from the data from the Israeli study therefore make it probable that “a third dose will be required within six to twelve months of the full vaccination”.
However, Biontech / Pfizer added that “encouraging data” had been obtained from an ongoing study that followed people after their third vaccination. A publication of these study results in a scientific journal should follow soon.
In addition, Biontech / Pfizer plans to submit this data to the US FDA and the European Medicines Agency EMA. The vaccine manufacturer is certain that a third dose of vaccine can guarantee the vaccinees the highest level of protection against all corona variants tested so far. This also includes the delta variant. Nonetheless, Biontech / Pfizer is pushing the development of an adapted version of its own mRNA vaccine in parallel.
Biontech vaccine loses its effectiveness – EMA and US drug agency FDA react cautiously
The drug authorities have not yet made any recommendations for a third corona vaccination. After the Biontech / Pfizer statement, the FDA announced that fully vaccinated Americans would not currently need a booster. However, one is able to react if new scientific findings make third-party vaccination necessary. They are also working independently of the pharmaceutical manufacturers to find out.
The EMA also exercised restraint. “It is too early to confirm at the moment whether and when a booster dose will be necessary for corona vaccines,” said the European authority on a dpa request. There is currently not enough data to make a judgment about a possibly necessary third vaccination dose. In order to be able to react quickly in an emergency, however, one is in contact with the vaccine manufacturers. (kh)
