The mutation of the coronavirus, which occurred in minks on farms in Denmark, due to which all animals were destroyed in the country, turned out to be dangerous for two reasons, one of which is the ability to create more super-spreaders, and the other is the ability to infect people who have already had COVID-19. About this live on his channel in Youtube said Ancha Baranova, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor at the School of Systems Biology at George Mason University (USA), Chief Researcher at the Medical Genetic Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to her, an article describing the mutations of the coronavirus that has occurred in animals is now preparing for publication in Denmark. Scientists took different strains of the virus from different minks in Denmark at different stages of the “mink epidemic” and found that in these animals the virus began to evolve rapidly and mutated at least four times. Thus, the protein responsible for reproduction has changed in it.
“What can this lead to if this virus starts walking in the human population? There will be more so-called “super-spreaders”. Those [люди]who catch the virus are likely to be able to spread it to more people. I say “probably” why? Because no one observed this, naturally, in the human population, ”she said.
Scientists found out the second property by trying to neutralize the coronavirus with the help of canned neutralizing sera taken from people who had had a coronavirus infection at the beginning of the epidemic. It turned out that most of the sera cannot cope with the new strain.
“This means that the immunity acquired against the original virus does not protect against the mink virus. Not all people, some of them still landed, just the titer slightly decreased. And although this is just an in vitro experiment (in a test tube, – “Lenta.ru”) (…), it was such scary enough information that the Danes would react to it this way. Which I think is still wrong, because it would be better if it was all studied, and not destroyed at all, ”said Baranova.
Earlier, in an interview with Lente.ru, virologist Sergei Netesov expressed a version of the origin of coronavirus in the human population, according to which minks could be an intermediate link between bats and humans. He recalled that in China, as well as in the city of Wuhan, where the epidemic came from, there are many burrow farms.
Mink infection has been found on 20 percent of Danish farms. After that, the authorities decided to destroy all the animals.
