From any angle that you look at Brazilian agriculture, sustainability will appear as a great opportunity, in all senses, including business. A good example of this is that the figures for the bio-inputs market (biological pesticides and bioinoculants) reached R$ 1.7 billion in the 2020/21 agricultural harvest, an amount that represents a 37% growth over the previous season. These numbers are in the BIP (Business Intelligence Panel) survey, by the consulting firm Spark Inteligência Estratégica. By itself, this advance would be quite representative, but it is even more expressive given the moment we live in, still under the effects of a pandemic.
This expansion of biological products reinforces the movement of the agricultural segments towards a balance between productivity and environmental gain. When the need to apply chemical pesticides on crops is reduced, even these products are benefited, as they can have a longer lifespan, among other factors. It is not by chance that biological innovations have already become practically mandatory in the season of launching technological solutions by leading companies in the pesticide sector.
I venture to say that hardly anyone who lives the day-to-day of agribusiness still calls the biological segment a trend. In addition to becoming an indisputable reality, it gained official status after the launch of the National Bioinputs Program, in May of last year. Minister Tereza Cristina herself stated, at the time, that many billions could be saved in the coming years due to this technology. In 2020, 96 new biological products were registered in the country, practically double the previous record of 50 registrations in 2018.
In addition to the business issue – according to information from CropLife Brasil, the global market for biologicals is estimated at between US$ 3 billion and US$ 4 billion –, the growth in the range of biological solutions can still favor the image of Brazilian agriculture. Whether at international summits to discuss the future of food, fiber and energy production, or in front of the most diverse consumers right here. The more and better agro shows its sustainable practices, the greater the chances of being seen and understood for what it really is: an indispensable sector for the country.
