Last week the appointment of Shaila-Ann Rao in the role of General secretary for sport e D.Executive Director of F1, replacing Peter Bayer. The latter, after leaving his post, pushed the FIA and its President, Mohamed Ben Sulayem, to look for a replacement, finding him in the figure of the one who, from 2016 to 2018, had already held the role of General Manager of the FIA. The element that caused the most discussion in the paddock, however, was focused on the curriculum of Ann Rao, who for the last three years has worked in Mercedes as General Councilor and Special Advisor of the Anglo-German team.
An aspect that has generated some doubts among the various team principals present today in the top flight, starting with that of Ferrari, Mattia Binottowho commented on this promotion in the pre-Azerbaijani GP press conference reserved for the teams: “Yes, it certainly is cause for concern – explained the Italian-Swiss manager and engineer – although I think he is still a great person, who has a lot of experience and will definitely be able to do this job. Of this I am sure, it also remains a concern. I think it is up to the FIA to make sure there are no conflicts of interest, that they behave fairly, and that it is up to the president to ensure this. I am confident they will, but as Ferrari we are worried. I’m pretty sure that through their behaviors and decisions, they will prove that it is a wrong impression ”.
On the other hand, the Mercedes team principal, Toto Wolffon the other hand, he reassured about the choice of the FIA, even more after having met in person a reliable figure like that of the new Executive Director: “As for Shaila-Ann, she was at the FIA before joining us – added Wolff – the advantage of having her in this position is that she deals with governance and transparency. You are a lawyer, and in the past we have always criticized the fact that in F1 there were not always aspects like that transparent and clear for teams. I think this is one of the key themes he will try to implement, and this is good news for all the teams ”.
