The Formula 1 Commission and the teams got together today in London to discuss several particularly hot and highly topical points in the Circus, including the theme of competitions Sprint. More than for those to be held this season – in Austria and Brazil, in addition to the one just filed in Imola – the conference in the British capital will focus on the opportunity to increase to six the number of total appointments in view of the world championship 2023therefore trying to formalize a general will not completed for this season exclusively for economic reasons.
According to the results of a survey prepared by the FIA, 40% of fans would have expressed a favorable opinion on the new format, whose debut dates back to the last world championship. On the contrary, 34% highlighted their opposition to the Sprint, with Mattia Binotto which does not fall within this specific percentage. Arriving in London on behalf of the Maranello company, the Ferrari team principal has repeatedly remarked his positive opinion on the short race that establishes the starting grid for the Sunday one, reiterating his thoughts even before the start of the meeting: “As Ferrari we are in favor – explained the 52-year-old Italian-Swiss – because we believe that, overall, it will provide better opportunities for entertainment and revenue. So, I think it’s right to support this project, and we plan to bring the number of Sprint events to six. Also in terms of costs – he added – it is a topic that has already been discussed, and we know what the budget cap, income and allowances can be worth “.
To ensure that the goal of increasing Sprints to six is achieved, the London meeting will have to record one majority of 25 votes out of 30, of which twenty reserved exclusively for FIA and FOM, and the other ten dedicated to teams. An outcome that hopes to see the F1 Sporting Director, Ross Brawnwho has already anticipated the new project linked to budget allowance cap in Sprints, which should be recalculated on the basis of the number of appointments. In addition to this, the same British manager also admitted other points that will be discussed at the meeting, among them the same budget cap: “Every sprint has an allowance – has explained – at the moment it is three times the allowance, next year it will be six times the allowance. In addition, I think that rising inflation needs to be reviewed, because when these rules were developed, inflation was relatively low and predictable; now it is high and unpredictable. If you look at the inflation rates that apply to industrial companies like Formula 1 teams, you have energy, raw materials and all the things that are quite expensive at the moment. Consequently, there may soon be a solution ”.
