After the 2018 season, Ferrari recorded the alternation between Maurizio Arrivabene And Mattia Binotto at the helm of the Maranello team. The Arrivabene era began on 24 November 2014 at the end of a complicated season for the Prancing Horse marked by the end of the relationship with Fernando Alonso in a debut in the turbo-hybrid era far below expectations for Ferrari. In addition to the arrival of Arrivabene, the Maranello house after 2014 also changed President, from Luca Cordero di Montezemolo to Sergio Marchionne. Sebastian Vettel has become the benchmark behind the wheel after the four titles he won at the wheel of Red Bull, but the title was only touched in 2017 and 2018.
On January 7, 2019, the role of team principal officially passed from Maurizio Arrivabene to Mattia Binotto, who assumed the dual position of technical director and team principal. Until now, the three-year period by Mattia Binotto is marked by choices that have proved to be spot on at the level of drivers, given that Charles Leclerc – already officially promoted in mid-2018 with Arrivabene at the wall – was joined by Carlos Sainz, whose performance in this 2021 was so far positive. The big exam will be the 2022, a season on which Ferrari has staked all its chips in conjunction with a regulatory change which the Scuderia di Maranello wants to take advantage of to return to playing a leading role in F1.
Interviewed by the magazine People Mattia Binotto said he feels comfortable in the role of leader: “Do I see myself as a leader? I think yes. Ever since I was very young, even when I was playing football, I was the team captain. That of the leader was therefore a role that I have always played, feeling at ease. I don’t think I was a great player and I don’t think I’m a good engineer, but I think I can support Ferrari from a leadership point of view. I think the most appropriate comparison is that of the conductor. I’m not the one who plays every single instrument, but I’m the one who gives everyone the opportunity to express their potential to the fullest, not as individuals, but as a team ”.
