With the first massive developments introduced in Barcelona, there has been a resurgence of discussion of the budget cap imposed on the teams, in this historical period conditioned by the heavy inflation that the world economy – and in particular the British one – is experiencing. In the press conference of the team principals in Monte Carlo it was very interesting the confrontation between Christian Horner and Mattia Binottothe numbers one respectively of Red Bull and Ferrari who are putting on a show up front at the start of the season.
From his Horner confirmed a drastic position already expressed in recent days, while Binotto was a little more diplomatic but still agreed with his colleague on the need to increase the ceiling in light of the surrounding conditions that are emerging: “I agree with Christian that we need to raise the budget cap – said the manager of Ferrari – Inflation at 6% is very high and I believe that all the top teams will hit the spending cap very soon. It would be wrong for a league to be decided by the budget cap, so the only way is to raise it. It is possible that many will go beyond the spending ceiling and at that point it would be bad for financial regulations, because with that we would begin to question its value. There is no way to stay under the budget cap, we will go further. In the regulation there is a tolerance of 5% beyond which it is considered a minor infringement, but we do not know what the penalties are ”.
“I don’t think it’s a different matter for big and small teams, but one of responsibility towards the regulations – added Binotto – Now we are experimenting with them: by understanding them we will know how to improve them. If everyone acts out of personal interest, there is no progress. For example, in 2021 we shared the decision to freeze the technical regulation until 2022, even knowing that our machine was not competitive “.
The Cavallino team principal also spoke about the cap on the salaries of the drivers, the so-called salary cap: “We are talking about it, but there is no simple or short solution. There are also legal implications. It will take time, but we are certainly addressing the issue ”.
