Yesterday, US President Joe Biden began a visit to France, where he will participate with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, in celebrations commemorating the Normandy landings carried out by the Allies on June 6, 1944, with a desire to demonstrate Western unity against the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine.
Today, Biden visits the beaches of Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, where he meets with British King Charles III, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Biden will then begin a state visit to France.
The White House announced that US President Joe Biden will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky while they are in France. White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that Biden will discuss with Zelensky “the current situation in Ukraine, and how we can continue and strengthen our support for Kiev.” The Elysee Palace said that French President Emmanuel Macron will receive Zelensky at the Elysee Palace tomorrow, Friday. The Elysee Palace added that the two presidents will discuss Ukraine’s needs. Biden and Zelensky are scheduled to meet during the G7 summit scheduled from June 13 to 15 in the Puglia region in southern Italy.
The French presidency did not hide its desire to demonstrate Western unity at a time when Europe is witnessing a large-scale conflict. Macron is supposed to clarify in particular his intentions regarding the possibility of sending military trainers to Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron’s office said that Paris will open a development agency in Ukraine with a total value of 450 million euros ($489.15 million), while launching a fund for sensitive infrastructure projects worth another 200 million euros. Paris will announce the two bilateral agreements to enhance reconstruction efforts during the two-day visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to France, which begins today, Thursday, June 6.
